About Senators for Climate Solutions

Our Purpose

Senators for Climate Solutions brings together, informs, and supports Canadian senators who want to find effective solutions to climate change. Our focus has been on education with a view to using our knowledge in our legislative work and other roles as senators. We have more than 45 members with representation from across the country and throughout the chamber.

What We Do

Our work is multi-faceted. We provide briefing notes and sessions with expert speakers on a wide variety of climate topics. We apply a climate lens to legislation that passes through the Senate, collaborating on the study of bills to ensure that they are in line with Canada’s climate goals. We collaborate with other parliamentarians in Canada and internationally, deepen partnerships with other governments, research groups, civil society organizations and the private sector, among others. Through these avenues, we provide valuable insight into climate science, mitigation and adaptation strategies, as well as demystify new and emerging technology trends to help us meet our climate commitments.

Origins

Senators for Climate Solutions was co-founded in 2021 by Senators Mary Coyle and Stan Kutcher. The group is modeled after and collaborates on a regular basis with Peers for the Planet, a similar climate and biodiversity group that operates within the UK House of Lords.

Guiding Principles

We believe that the demand for climate action is of such a scale and urgency that the efforts of experts need to be enhanced by support from a wider, more broadly based group. Members of Senators for Climate Solutions will draw on their combined diversity of experience, power, and influence to tackle the twin crises of climate change and biodiversity loss in Canada and across the world.
