Mandate Letter

On May 21st, 2025, Prime Minister Carney released a mandate letter for the 30th Ministry. In the letter Prime Minister Carney states that "In addressing the tasks before us, we must remain true to Canadian values. Canada is a dynamic country that celebrates our diversity, cares for the most vulnerable among us, and strives for a better future for all. The new federal Government will continue the vital work of advancing reconciliation with Indigenous Peoples. We will fight climate change. We will uphold the rule of law, protect our democratic institutions, and reinforce the unity of our country."

G20 Leaders' Summit

  • 2024 G20 Leaders' Summit in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil: Canada secured participation as a key player in the Global Clean Power Alliance, and announced significant investments in global biodiversity. 
    • The Global Clean Power Alliance is a United Kingdom-led initiative aiming to boost global investment in clean energy and help countries move away from fossil fuels. 
    • Canada announced over $25 million to help restore global diversity, to help support malnutrition and work with farmers in climate stressed regions to support conservation efforts and enhance food security. 
  • 2023 G20 Leader's Summit in New Delhi India: At the G20 Summit Canada stressed the urgent need for G20 partners to step up as the impacts of climate change worsen, pointing to countries who have experienced extreme climate events, including wildfires here in Canada. To address these concerns Canada announced the following investments at the summit:
    • Up to $63 million in funding for five new Partnering for Climate projects that will use nature-based solutions to support climate change adaptation in Sub-Saharan Africa, help to build climate-resilient economies, protect and increase biodiversity, and empower women and girls;
    • $7.7 million to fund inclusive, sustainable development of agricultural value chains in Bolivia to help improve resilience for vulnerable Indigenous populations in the face of climate change and food insecurity;
    • $7 million to the Catalytic Climate Finance Facility to bolster climate finance projects in developing countries and support projects that address the impacts of climate change on economically vulnerable groups, particularly women and girls
  • 2022 G20 Leaders’ Summit in Bali, Indonesia: G20 Leaders resolved to limit global temperature increases to 1.5⁰C, and declared their support for funds to address losses and damages from climate change in developing countries.
    • Both of these declarations signaled the G20’s strong ambition to the concurrently held COP27 international climate conference in Egypt.
    • Canada urged ambition on halting biodiversity loss at the Montreal COP15 international biodiversity negotiations in December 2022
    • Canada re-allocated $550 million to support the G20’s $20 billion Just Energy Transition Partnership for Indonesia to phase-out coal and expand renewable energy generation.
  • 2021 G20 Leaders’ Summit in Rome, Italy: Canada reiterated commitment from June 2021 to double climate finance commitment to $5.3 billion over next 5 years.
    • At least 20% pledged to address biodiversity loss.
    • 80% to target gender equality outcomes, including Equal by 30 - campaign to advance gender equality in clean energy.
    • Canada co-published, with Germany, a delivery plan for mobilizing US $100 billion in annual climate financing to developing countries.
